New Cancer Clues

New clues about how tumors prepare for cancer's deadly spread may open up new avenues for cancer prevention and treatment.

A Japanese study suggests that early in lung cancer's progression, cells within a tumor may pave the way for cancer's invasion by triggering processes that allow for the spread of disease. By interrupting these signals, researchers were able to block the development of cancer's spread to lungs in mice.

Dogs Curing Cancer?

From Scientific American:

More than a third of American households include dogs, and scientists estimate that some four million of these animals will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Pet dogs and humans are the only two species that naturally develop lethal prostate cancers. The type of breast cancer that affects pet dogs spreads preferentially to bones--just as it does in women. And the most frequent bone cancer of pet dogs, osteosarcoma, is the same cancer that strikes teenagers.

Researchers in the emerging field of comparative oncology believe such similarities offer a novel approach for combating the cancer problem. These investigators compare naturally occurring cancers in animals and people--exploring their striking resemblances as well as their notable differences.

Among the "healthy" items to flunk out were many of Americans' most popular brands, including Healthy Choice and Lean Cuisine frozen dinners, Campbell's soups, and Yoplait and Dannon yogurt cups.

Don't Drink, Don't Smoke, What Do You Do?

Smoking and heavy alcohol use may curb the likelihood of survival among men diagnosed with cancer, researchers from South Korea report.

There is some evidence that these "cancer risk factors" boost mortality among cancer patients, Dr. Young Ho Yun of the National Cancer Center in Goyang and colleagues note. But to date no one has investigated how having these risk factors before cancer is diagnosed influences survival afterwards.

Cancer - It's Your Body, It's Your Fight

Read Del's blog, where he talks about his fight with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. In it, he calls essiac one of his "all-star alternatives." (Del apparently uses four-herb essiac. While effective, we believe our eight-herb essiac is even more so.)
