It's no secret that nontraditional therapies have grown in popularity in recent years. According to a 2002 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, more than one-third of Americans have used complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). The reasons for choosing CAM are varied, but research points to two primary motivators: a growing disillusionment with conventional treatments, plus a desire to have more of a say in one's own well-being.
